Early detection saves lives—and from July 2025, eligible Australians will have access to the new National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP).
At Lung and Sleep, we’re ready to support you and your patients through every step of the screening, diagnosis, and treatment process.
Why Screen for Lung Cancer?
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Australia—but when caught early, it’s much more treatable.
Screening with low-dose CT scans can detect small lung cancers before symptoms appear. Research shows this can significantly reduce lung cancer deaths, especially in high-risk groups.
Key benefits:
- Detects lung cancer at an early stage when treatment is more effective
- Reduces the need for more invasive procedures
- Provides peace of mind to high-risk patients
- Improves long-term survival rates
Who is Eligible for Screening?
You may be eligible for the NLCSP if you meet all of the following criteria:
- Age: Between 50 and 70 years old
- Smoking History: Have a history of tobacco cigarette smoking of at least 30 pack-years
- Smoking Status: Currently smoke or have quit smoking within the past 10 years
- Symptoms: Have no signs or symptoms suggestive of lung cancer (i.e., you are asymptomatic)
Note: A pack-year is calculated by multiplying the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years the person has smoked. For example, smoking one pack a day for 30 years equals 30 pack-years.
Your healthcare provider can help determine your eligibility based on your age and smoking history.
